The Hawks’ season ended Wednesday night when they were defeated by the Bulls in the play-in tournament. This is the third consecutive season that Atlanta has participated in the play-in tournament. However, this was the first time they were unable to escape. To say this season was a failure would be an understatement. Big changes are coming and the first domino fell when the Hawks hired Onsi Saleh from Golden State as assistant general manager.
In a pivotal season as such, the Hawks need to add as much experience as possible in the front office. Landry Fields is a first-time general manager and his right-hand man is Kyle Korver, who played for the Hawks not long ago.
It’s too early to make sweeping assessments of his tenure. They’re in the Atlanta front office, but it’s hard to find many positives. It’s a gift for a team whose star point guard recently reached the Eastern Conference Finals and has only fallen short since former general manager Travis Schlenk left the organization.
Saleh is another young executive who is quickly climbing the rankings. He spent the past few years in the Warriors organization under Mike Dunleavy, most recently vice president of basketball strategy and team affairs. Before coming to Golden State, he worked in the Spurs front office for five years.
