While the Cowboys and Dak Prescott once expressed optimism about a long-term contract extension, recently the The negotiations made no progress. The organization previously said it would not let its franchise QB become a free agent, but with owner Jerry Jones drawing the line clearly, that is no longer a guarantee that Dak will play in Dallas in 2025.
The midfielder acknowledged the fact that the 2024 campaign could mark his last season in Dallas. Speaking to reporters yesterday, Prescott at least hinted that he could become a free agent after the upcoming season.
“I wouldn’t say I’m scared to be here or not. Honestly, I’m not afraid of any situation,” Prescott said (via NFL.com’s Coral Smith). “I love this game, I love playing and I love improving as a player and the teammates around me. Right now, that’s with the Dallas Cowboys, that’s where I want to go, that’s where I’m at and that’s the goal. And after the season, we will know where we are and whether the future holds that or not. And if not, we’ll go from there. Jones has previously complained that the QB’s escalating contracts would limit spending elsewhere on the roster, and it appears the owner/GM is hoping Prescott will get a bit of a discount on his next contract mine. With the QB market now surpassing the $50 million AAV mark, it’s unclear how much money the Cowboys will want to save on the veteran’s next deal. Prescott seemed open to a cut, telling reporters he’s “not necessarily trying to be the highest-paid guy.”
Prescott confirmed he was in discussions with Jones and the Cowboys front office, although those conversations don’t necessarily revolve around specific numbers. It’s unclear whether either side is interested in continuing discussions about the regular season, but the quarterback has made it clear that he will soon be fully focused on the 2024 campaign.
“Honestly, I’m focused on the moment,” Prescott said. “If negotiations start and real discussions take place, of course we can talk about getting there , but in this case, right now, I’m afraid to “improve, become better than I am.” So I leave that up to my agent and Jerry at this point.”
In addition to Prescott, the Cowboys are also hoping to extend quarterback Micah. Parsons and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, a pair of contracts that would further eat into the team’s financial breathing room. The Cowboys will not have the option to franchise Prescott after this season and given the impending financial impact of the QB extension, the organization is unlikely to. will definitely focus on getting this deal done first.
